Baja’s stunning beaches and laid-back lifestyle are by far the main attractions for out-of-
state visitors. Due to its proximity to the U.S., quick weekend getaways are quite popular
among California residents.

Come, discover Rosarito Beach treasures
Here you will find some of the world´s best surfing, fishing, golf and shopping await you
just half an hour south of San Diego.

With the border being so close, many people will hop south to do their shopping in
Mexico. The Mexican Peso has been a stable currency for many years now, where
capital inflow from North of the border and oil export revenues will keep the currency
very strong.  In 2009, 1.00 USD = 13.3434 MXN.  With the passage of the North
American Free Trade Agreement - NAFTA, México has stabilized economically and
socially, and it is easier for foreigners to settle in the Baja area, especially with the push
for Mexicans to learn English. The low cost of living also allows you to splurge on
luxuries and quality services that would be prohibitive anywhere else.

Baja offers visitors several recreational options and tourist facilities, including the water
sports of surfing, gliding, scuba diving, sport fishing and whale-watching, as well as other
sports such as horseback riding in the mountains and along the beach, quads and
dunebuggying. The area hosts Jai Alai and greyhound races, as well as a great variety
of eco-tourism activities. Gray whale migrations take place in January and February.
Rosarito Beach is also the home of
Fox Studios, where Titanic, Masters and
Commanders, Deep Blue Sea, Pearl Harbor and other blockbusters were filmed. Baja
Studios and Xploration Theme Park are open to the public. There are caves and
archeological sites to explore, 300-year-old historical sites to visit, as well as rock
climbing, mountain biking and hiking.

We have four first-class golf courses in the area, two of them with spectacular ocean
views for your teeing pleasures. If you are looking for excitement, Rosarito has a number
of cabarets and discotheques where you can dance the night away. Mexico also has a
delightfully refreshing wine industry centered in Baja California Norte´s wine country at
Guadalupe Valley. Finally, let´s not forget the fabulous cuisine offered at a variety of
restaurants and bars doting the area, focusing on the region´s gastronomic specialty:
fish tacos and lobster prepared in many exquisite ways at affordable prices.

Lots of Americans and Canadians here!
The US Department of State estimates that there are between 600,000 and one million
Americans living in Baja and elsewhere in México, about 35,000 of whom live in the
Rosarito area, making up about one-third of the population here. Over a million
Canadians visit Mexico every year. Why do they come?  First and foremost, the cost of
living is quite low. The buying power of both U.S. and Canadian dollars is still strong in
Mexico, and  you get much more for your money in terms of property, food, cheap
healthcare, and entertainment. A very important service that brings lots of folks from the
north is the affordable medical care and dental services, as well as prescription drugs
that are exactly the same pharmaceutical name brands offered in the U.S. but at a
fraction of the price. Plus, there are many spas and resorts in this area where you can
receive treatments that you could only dream of up north. How inexpensive you want
your lifestyle to be will depend on how you take advantages of conveniences offered
and how immersed you want to be in the Mexican culture.

Second, the weather. In addition to the beauty and ammenities offered in this area,
you´ll find the perfect weather - the coolest temperature is seldom below 50°F / 10º C
and the warmest hardly ever passes  85°F /30º C because of the cool ocean breezes.
No snow days here!

Perhaps most importantly, Mexico is a healthy place to live - fresh fruit and vegetables
are always in season. Unlike North American produce that is picked green and allowed
to ripen in transit, Mexican produce is picked at its peak and sold in the market the very
next day, and fish are caught locally and have a very limited shelf life so products go
fast. In fact, bordering the fence that encloses the Fox Studio off the free road to
Ensenada is the best fishing village in Rosarito, where the fisherman will line the shores
with their boats while they peddle their catch. The only fresher fish you will find in this
area are still swimming in the ocean.

The Baja lifestyle
Rosarito Beach is located in the Mexican state of Baja California, and thus referred to as
Baja. Life is less stressful here, and people moving to our area always find time to
pursue their hobbies or just relax. This is the home of “Mejicana Mañana”, which means
that things get done as time permits.

Living in Baja, you´ll have plenty of time for a wide range of leisure activity. Take golfing,
for example. Within a short driving distance we have two world-class golf courses with
ocean views. Less prestigious but still good quality golfing can be had at two other
nearby courses.

The spas and resorts doting the Baja coastline are other luxuries that are now incredibly
affordable. While the Rosarito Beach Hotel is Rosarito´s premier hotel, resort, and spa,
others include Calafia, Puerto Nuevo and several along the road to Ensenada.

Shop till you drop
Rosarito is second only to Tijuana as a shopping haven. There are many arts and crafts
shops along the main boulevard in Rosarito Beach. The “stalls” constitute a labrynth of
nooks and crannies filled with bargains. You will also find products geared not only to
the tourist, but also toward the resident wanting to furnish their home, with many rustic
furniture shops, ceramics shops and stained glass shops. Rosarito Beach seems to be a
gathering place for artists also, so you will find some fine artwork here. Many small
shops line the main traffic area selling fine leather goods, jewelry, perfumes and fashion
items. Silver and stone-inlaid jewelry is the specialty of the area to be had for a song
and dance.

With the growth of the area, major retailers have established their presence here for the
shopping convenience of residents. Here you will find major American retailers Smart &
Final, Office Depot, Wall Mart and Home Depot, along with well-known eateries like
Applebee´s, Subway, McDonalds and Domino´s Pizza. In a hurry?  Check out the AM/PM
mini-market at the southern part of town by Las Gaviotas.

The Baja Endless Summer
Rosarito Beach has 10 miles of wide beaches, a haven for sun lovers and surfers alike.
Along this stretch of the Pacific, you will find great surfing spots for both beginners and
advanced surfers. Online surf conditions are available from
Surfing San Diego.

Annual Events
Rosarito has many annual events and festivals such as North America´s third largest
bike ride, the twice-a-year Rosarito to Ensenada Race, Spring Break, the Rosarito Fair,
Mainly Mozart Festival, Wine and Lobster Fest, volleyball tourneys, motorcycle events,
and much more.

Mexico´s Bordeaux Belt
Baja California is Mexico’s wine country. The mission grape brought over and planted by
the Jesuits in the 18th century found its perfect home in the Guadalupe Valley, an area
that compares in climate to California’s Napa Valley and France’s Rhone Valley and
referred to as Mexico´s Bordeaux Belt. Mexican wines, which have garnered numerous
international awards over the past years, are just beginning to capture the attention of a
wine-loving audience. Local wineries produce almost 80 percent of Mexico's wines, and
inexpensive tastings and tours are offered by several wineries. Visit the
Mexico Wines
webpage for details.
